Watched Takeover tonight. Thought it was just an ok show until the final two matches elevated it to greatness.
Almas vs Gargano was the best WWE match I've seen in forever. I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a better match in NXT history, and I can't do it. Action built around sequences of moves and counters (and not just big move, near fall, big move, near fall). A compelling underdog story told with perfect psychology (I was genuinely concerned for Gargano's health at certain points). And the kind of heel/babyface dynamic that you just don't get in this country any more.
And the "you deserve it" chant after the DVD on the chairs in Cole vs Black is the first time that chant has ever made me happy.

I wanted to make mention of two spots from this weekend that I responded to greatly.
The first is obviously the Kenny Omega / Ibushi embrace. I know this isn't the thread for it, but it is for my next one. Omega turning him down and Ibushi stopping himself from leaving afterwards, and essentially refusing to turn away from a friend in need regardless of Kenny's pride was beautiful. The embrace just screamed of the type of unrelenting friendship that will remain in spite of disagreements, distance, or Bullet Club brotherhood. Really beautiful work by both men.
Secondly, the spot that literally almost brought me to tears. About 20-25 minutes into the Gargano/Almas match, when we've already had more near falls than most big Cena matches, and Gargano's heart is shining through. He's been beaten to a pulp, and absorbed the worst the Almas has for him. There's something instinctual to his kick-outs - it's his heart refusing to let him quit. It's the only thing keeping him going. He begins crawling for the corner. He slowly crawls out of the ring. He's inching closer and closer to where his wife, Candice LeRae is seated. He's quite literally reaching for what gives him strength - his reason to keep going. To continue enduring the pain. I thought that was perhaps the most beautiful thing I've seen in a wrestling match since Shawn's proclamation "I'm sorry, I love you." And the cherry on top of this emotional sundae is LeRae jumping the barricade and going nuts on Vega - the fury of a wife protecting her man. A lioness.
When pro wrestling is great, there's absolutely nothing better.

Finally got around to watching Takeover: Philly and good show with a fantastic main event. To think, Almas was trying to keep his head above water this time last year and if he had got released it sadly wouldn't have surprised me considering they weren't doing anything with him at that point. For him to turn it around (and with the addition of Vega) has really made the most of this opportunity.

WWE put together this brilliant little mini-doc on Chris Hero. Well worth your eight minutes! Finally had some time to sit down and watch this, and it's really great. With a little tweaking (maybe a few less "insider" details) they could put things like this on tv from time to time and get people over really quickly. Just short featurettes that let you know that these are real people with dreams and obsessions that you can relate to. And as an added bonus it would eat up more tv time than some slickly produced thirty second character vignette, which would be good for three hour Raws. Just as an example, if they had done one of these every week for a few select cruiserweight wrestlers before launching that division (instead of those "the cruiserweights are coming" vignettes) they might not have been met with complete indifference.

I commend them for trying some new things, and I don’t necessarily hate the selfie promos...yet. But this and the Usos prison bar graphics look hokey and just don’t work for me.

I thought the prison bars were a decent idea just badly executed it would have been better to save for a promo video leading up to a big match or something.
