LOVE Black Dynamite. I had been dying to see it since I first heard about it before Sundance. Bought the DVD the day it came out. You will not be disappointed, it is one of the funniest movies I've seen.

I really didn't like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. I suppose I was fine with it for a little while, but there's such a hectic pace that it never slows down and establishes a pulse. Pixar is king because of their heart. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, to me, was just a frenetic, and actually rather disgusting Sunday matinee diversion.
Black Dynamite I liked slightly better, but I really wanted to love it more. My biggest problem was that the performances were ALL over the place. Michael Jai White is brilliant as he treats the material seriously, whereas other guys are desperately struggling to be funny and it's just brutal to watch on screen. Also, I think the comedy got too broad near the end... I know the whole movie is a farce to begin with, but I didn't like the heights they took the absurdity to. I laughed a whole lot, but was also pretty disappointed to see what it could have been in more confident hands.

I agree that Michael Jai White was amazing and that the acting was all over the place, but I think the other actors were sorta hamming it up on purpose to make the movie more umm authentic at least that's what I gathered from it. Some of the jokes were so bad that I laughed.

Speaking of which, I rewatched Toy Story 3 the other day, and was really amazed how quickly they got through everything. It felt like a very different movie the second time around. Still great mind you, just different.

Black Dynamite.
FUNNY!
I'm kinda done watching "retro" movies shot in the same way that it was back in the day, or close to it. But this was funny with or without the nostalgia factor in it.
Good movie.

Hatchet.
It took me 5 years to see it, and it was worth it.
The gore was surprisingly very good, the story was ok and the acting was good enough to sit through. The oddest thing though was the humor in the movie almost overshadows the gore...almost.
If you haven't seen the movie, do so. It's on Netflix Instant Watch, if you have Netflix of course.

American Psycho
Loved this movie. The climax scene with the carnivorous ATM was just completely over-the-top (in a good way).

Inception
DAMN! That is all. It isn't my favorite movie of the year (Toy Story 3 most definitely) but it's one i'll be glad to see on repeated viewings to understand what's going on.

I loved this movie as well, and it showed how great Christian Bale actually is, considering he improvised on a lot of it (This scene was one example).

I've been away from this thread for too long! I won't do ratings for everything i've watched recently, but here's a list of all i've watched thus far in 2010. This doesn't include short films or revisits, however I do list films I had already seen prior to January of 2008 (when I began logging by viewing habits). I've seen 283 films thus far this year, which is my record. Last year I watched 400 in total.

Yojimbo (1961) Akira KurosawaThis was my first Kurosawa film, after hearing endless praise for his cinematography. Needless to say, the man's one of my favorite directors now. Prior to seeing "Yojimbo", all I knew of it was that it acted as inspiration for Clint Eastwood's legendary "Dollars" trilogy. I personally found Toshirô Mifune's character more compelling than "the man with no name", but that may simply be because I found the aforementioned cinematography here to be better than Sergio Leone's. Personal favor aside, this is definately a film worth seeing, and is currently in the foregin films section of Netflix's Instant Queue.

There's been a big Kurosawa festival on at my local art house cinema this month (local as in 35 miles away). Fourteen films in total. Yojimbo is playing this Sunday but I don't think I'll be able to make it, but I have seen Rashomon and Ikiru and I thought both were great.

The IllusionistHonestly, I don't know why I kept putting this movie off. The movie starts off with Eisenheim, a famous magician (Played by Edward Norton). As he's performing a magic show, he's arrested by Chief Inspector Uhl (Played by Paul Giamatti). After he arrests Eisenheim, he tells every piece of information he knows about Eisenheim to Crown Prince Leopold (Played by Rufus Sewell). This includes the beginning of his life, why/how he became involved with magic, his early love life, his leaving of Vienna, his return to Vienna, and the few months before he arrested Eisenheim. Basically, the entire movie is narrated by Giamatti until the last 10 minutes or so. As I mentioned, the narration also includes Eisenheim's early "lover", Sophie (Played by Jessica Biel). Since he was in the lower class, and Sophie was in the upper class, they could never be together. After he learned they could never be together, Eisenheim leaves his home (Vienna), but returns 15 years later, learning that Sophie is now with the Crown Prince (With rumors going around that they may get married soon). The narration aspect adds a LOT to the movie. If it was a straight movie with no narration, and through Norton's point of view, it would be a plain movie. Since the narration is involved, it seems more like a tale about magic and wonders, which fits with the genre. I won't say too much more, because I think I spoiled some of the movie already, and don't want to spoil too much more.

By the look of the DVD cover, it should already draw red flags in your mind saying STAY AWAY! If that wasn't enough, here's the poster for the theatrical release that, shockingly, it never got: When you're promoting that the movie was made by the same guy who did H20, that's not a good sign. He did direct Friday the 13th Part 3, which is one of the best Friday movies. But, that won't save this movie. The only thing this movie shares from the original, are the names of the characters. That's it. Nick Cannon is a comic relief one lining machine, Ving Rhames is only in the movie for like 10 minutes, Mena Suvari is the heroine and a boring one at that, and the "Bub" character got a complete overhaul and known as "Bud"in this movie. He becomes a zombie, but doesn't eat people. Why? Because he's a vegetarian. No one should ever watch this movie, not even if you're looking for a crappy movie to watch on a boring night. Going to sleep is infinitely better than watching this.
