According to an SI article, the best QB without a Super Bowl ring is.....*drum roll please*......
Phillip Rivers!
Yes, he beat out Donovan McNabb, Carson Palmer & Michael Vick as the best starting quarterback who's ring-less. The past 3 seasons, Rivers passing rating has been 101.6, 104.4 and 105.5 and has thrown 135 touchdowns in five seasons. All of those numbers are fantastic, but he's never led the Chargers past the AFC Championship game during that span. He's a fantastic QB, but they really need to do a better job during the draft, because other than Ryan Matthews last year, I can't name anyone else that they've drafted that is paying off for them.

Other than McNabb, I'm pretty sure Palmer and Vick have never made it past, or even to, a championship round either. If its out of those three though, I'd pick Rivers also. Him and McNabb is arguable, but I'm sure he got bonus points in that article for playing in that AFC Championship with a torn ACL. Is this out of current playing QBs or overall? Cause Dan Marino or Dan Fouts over Rivers, easy. I agree that out drafting has been awful. Out of the past few drafts, atleast one or two people become starters, while the rest of the draftees suffer the fate of being on the practice squad or released. We do seem to be successful with signing undrafted free agents though. Antonio Gates and Mike Tolbert for example.

Vick led the Falcons to the NFC Divisional Playoffs in 2004 and lost to, coincidentally, Philadelphia. While Palmer led the Bengals to the AFC Wild Card game in 2005 and lost to Pittsburgh, which is also the game where he tore his ACL & MCL. You can also pinpoint that game as the start of his rapid decline as a starting QB, he was never able to perform at that same level again. Although he had a pretty stellar 2007 season, he hasn't been able to do it consistently. This is out of current QBs yes, but I can go through a whole list of guys that should have SB rings but don't. I didn't know gates & Tolbert were FAs, what teams were they on before?

But other than Vick, those two are on the decline, so its easy to pick Rivers ahead, with him currently performing the way he is. He's still fresh in everyone's mind, and is reaching/playing at his prime. With Vick, its easy to argue that he has more weapons than Rivers, so I can see why analysts would choose Phillip. Gates and Tolbert went undrafted, and we scooped em up as FAs. In the past decade, we've only had a handful of successful first round picks, but I'm hoping Mathews can change that.

I think we can both agree that it's a list I'm positive no player ever wants to be on. I'm hopeful as well. Chargers are always in the thick of things, but rely on guys that will eventually get tired and have untested positions almost everyone on both sides of the ball. They need help, and need it now if they ever wanna make a run with Rivers at QB. He's only going to stay hot for so long before everything stops and starts to level out.

So. Here are my thoughts on the NBA All Star Weekend! I know, perfect timing!
I'll admit it. I was looking forward to All Star Saturday Night, but I wasn't emotionally in it. It was more of a “I have nothing to do so why not” type of deal. So, with nothing to do, I decided to watch all 3 hours of ASSN, and to my surprise, I was quite entertained for the most part.
The festivities started on Friday night with the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge, where the rookies & sophomores play against each other for..bragging rights? I have no idea, but it was a pretty good game overall. DeMarcus Cousins of the Sacramento Kings led all players in points with 33 & had 14 rebounds. Despite his often publicized behavioral issues, if the Kings can get that ironed out, he could be a great player down the line. The MVP of the game was John Wall of the Washington Wizards, he had 12 points but completely went assist crazy with 22! I think my record for assists in a game was like 1, and that was to myself.
It was a fairly competitive game down the stretch, and really showcased the young talent the NBA has going for it. Blake Griffin, John Wall, Derrick Favors & DeMarcus Cousins are showing some good strides in becoming elite players, while on the Sophomore side DeJuan Blair, Stephen Curry, Tyreke Evans, DeMar DeRozan, James Harden, Brandon Jennings & Serge Ibaka are becoming names that casual fans are starting to talk about more often. It's really nice to see a good crop of young players making an impact on their teams at such a young age in their careers, hope to hear more from these players in the future. Oh, and if you're wondering why I haven't really talked about Blake Griffin yet, I still got some other things to talk about....
Then came the Celebrity All Star game, didn't watch it.
Now, we get to the main events. Saturday night started with the Shooting Stars Competition. It's a shooting competition (shocked) that has one current NBA & WNBA players and one retired NBA player. It's difficult to judge a shoot around, because that's what it is. I will say this though, Rick Fox, Steve Kerr & Kenny Smith still have great shots for their age. I wish I can actually make a basket. Nothing special other than that, the Atlanta based team won. Let's move on.
Up next we got the Skills challenge. Think of it as an obstacle course, because that's what it is. You maneuver your way around cones, shoot a basket into a tire, make a layup, throw a pass into a net, then again, and again. If I sound like I'm belittling it, I'm not. You have to be really skilled to make all of the maneuvers to get around the objects while either shooting or passing it to an object. Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors won this event.
Next we had the Three Point contest, which was one of my favorites as a kid. Nowadays, the three pointer doesn't have the same meaning, to me. It's all about the drive inside and slam dunk, no love for the 3 point arch. Anyway, we had defending champion Paul Pierce return to defend his trophy against fellow teammate Ray Allen, James Jones of the Heat, Dorell Wright of the Warriors, Daniel Gibson of the Cavs and Kevin Durant of the Thunder (Durantulla!). Don't wanna break down everything in here, it'll take me forever, but a quick numerical look would suit this better:
1.) Durant is not a three point shooter. He's just not. Great everywhere else though. 2.) Poor Cavs. I was hoping Gibson would have a strong showing, but he only had one more point than Durant, and he had 6. Although, he didn't come out last so I guess there is something to be happy about. 3.) I really thought Allen was going to take this event after his first round of 20. There was no doubt in my mind he was going to top that score in the final round, but that wasn't the case. 4.) Paul nearly pulled off a two peat but alas, that was not the case. 5.) WOW! Didn't think Jones had a punchers change of winning this event. I don't get to watch a lot of Heat games, I'm gonna have too start now. Congrats to Jones.
Onto the Main Event. I didn't know what to expect in this Slam Dunk contest. I always get hyped up, but it never lives up to it. This time around however, it somehow did. I think a lot of it had to do with the creativity of the dunks. First we had Serge Ibaka's BEYOND THE FREE THROW DUNK! Sure, he's 6-10 but how often do you see over 6 foot tall guys glide in the air. He also snatched a teddy bear with his teeth on the rim and slam dunked it, pretty cool. DeRozan had a nice dunk in the first round when he bounced the ball off the ground, caught it, scooped it in his right hand and dunked it, it was so nice he got a 50 out of it, which is the highest total you can get in a slam dunk contest if you don't know. Unfortunately, DeRozan & Ibaka were both eliminated by the two guys who were in another stratosphere, Javale McGee & Blake Griffin (see, told you I'd talk about him). McGee scored the other 50 total dunk by proceeding to jam two basketballs that had side by side baskets! That took some talent right there. Blake took the more conservative approach with his dunks by boomshakalakaing his first one to the roar of the crowd and his second was an alleyoop assisted by teammate Baron Davis. Being the hometown guy really helped him get to the finals, which is kinda bad but what did you expect? Blake knew he had to really put a stamp on his first Slam Dunk contest...and he did just that. His dunk coach, Kenny Smith, hyped up this dunk really good, and I was anticipating what he was going to do. Then, I saw a car pull up, and thought “Oh shit”. In case you didn't get it, he dunked over a car. A CAR! I know it's been done before but on that big of a stage, that's still huge. Poor McGee didn't really have a chance after that, how the hell do you follow that! And so, Blake won the Slam Dunk contest and is by far one of the best overall contests in quite some time. It had everything you could have wanted, bravo guys. Bravo.
Finally we had the actual NBA All Star game, which was fine. Don't really have anything to say about it, it was just a big staged show where all of the guys did their thing. Kobe REALLY wanted that 4th MVP, I mean he really wanted it.
That was the NBA All Star Weekend, and it wasn't too shabby. It really made you feel like it was an event, which it was. I haven't followed the NBA like I used too, but now it's starting to hook me more and more. Overall, great event.
BTW, this is how you dunk over a car:
Just for clarification as to what a slam dunk over a car should look like.
