"We Can Overcome"
by her69eyes
February 18, 2008. Crowning Our Champions II. Nearing the end of his storied World Title run, Eric Fuerst also known as her69eyes released what many consider the greatest MV in the near 10 year existence of The MV Zone. Titled "We Can Overcome", little was known about the video in the days leading into the competition. Eric had posted a screenshot of his Vegas timeline displaying an abundance of some odd rainbow effect (which would later go on to be mimicked by many). In the thread, he proclaimed some doubts about whether the masses would enjoy this video, but assuredly stated that he in fact loved it. Time would tell if the community as a whole would accept his latest artistic entry.
He was slated to defend the title against fellow HOF'er Matt Daniels. Matt had released a gritty, cool, hardcore look at the entire Tommy Dreamer and Raven feud that would've been right at home if shown on ECW television. Eric took a completely different tact. "We Can Overcome" was a look at the oldest, most basic story known to man; good vs. evil. Upon first watch, it was difficult to comprehend everything that Eric was trying to say with this video. Then I watched it again. And again. And again. And again.
With each subsequent viewing, the message sank deeper and the legacy of this video immediately became clear. By taking the most basic concept, and just a handful of wrestling matches, her69eyes created a lasting tribute to everything that made wrestling and The MV Zone special. Contained within the bright rainbow hues wasn't just solid effect work; there was story. Within the quick zooming wasn't just sync, but art. Within the perfect lyrics wasn't just flow, but morality.
In the match, voting started off strong for Matt Daniels until the community had the proper opportunity to digest Eric's modern masterpiece. By the end of voting, her69eyes had yet another successful defense under his reign.
From the newest editors back then (such as myself) to established main eventers, everyone recognized that this video was a work of art. Whether it's the type of art that you enjoy or not is subjective; but like all masterpieces, it demands respect. And it was shown respect by all.
Personally, this video had a profound effect on me in my life and in my editing career. her69eyes has always been my greatest influence, and this video is the pinnacle of that significance. And just in everyday life, when the darkness of the world is surrounding and things begin to mount, I remind myself that "We can overcome evil with the greater good." It's a lesson we should all take to heart.
It is my absolute thrill to induct my favorite video of all time as the first ever MV into The MV Zone 2014 Hall Of Fame!
