Building off the discussion of songs from movies in the latest episode of The Catalog, I'm going to be posting many of my favorite musical moments from movies and television shows in this thread. And I'd like to hear yours as well. Original songs, scores, licensed music. All are welcome in this discussion. Speaking of being welcome: And this is how a movie announces itself in a big way: More opening credits: I'm not joking when I say Queen's "Flash Gordon" soundtrack is possibly my favorite album ever. Their music turns a knowingly silly comic book movie into something more like a rock opera. I'm far from done, but just to close out this opening post, here's my single favorite song from a movie of all time:

I don't know what it says about me that I immediately go to serial killer movies when thinking about great movie songs but...
"Strong As I Am" by The Prime Movers in the best scene from Michael Mann's "Manhunter"
"Goodbye Horses" by Q Lazzarus in that scene from Johnathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs"
"The Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan at the beginning, and end of David Fincher's masterpiece "Zodiac"

David Lynch made me into a lifelong Roy Orbison fan with his use of "In Dreams" in "Blue Velvet"
and Rebekah del Rio's Spanish language version of "Crying" ("Llorando") in "Mulholland Drive"

A few of mine off the top of my head...
As mentioned on The Catalog.
A classic.
This...or any other song from this film.
This x 1000. After all the ups and downs of an emotionally trying story, this instrumental, this voice over, and finally the payoff of David Bowie...it's just the perfect culmination for me.
Very underrated movie!
One of my earliest favorites. One of my favorite songs to this day, and this is the first place I heard it. Speaking of Cruel Intentions, this one may be even better...
I can think of a ton more, but I'll save them for a future post.

Speaking of Paul Thomas Anderson movies, this one always gets to me:
I'm not sure if "Magnolia" is his best movie or not, but I do find myself going back to it more than any other largely because of the many great Aimee Man songs.
The "Sister Christian" scene has also always reminded me of this one:
Both have that same mix of music, drugs, and the potential for imminent death.

Man, I love that scene and "Wise Up" as a song.
This one just came to mind. Anyone who doesn't fall in love with Julie Delpy in this scene has no heart.

"On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place."
The song is fun, but that line at the end is the best. Every time I hear it I laugh like it's completely new to me.

The video beej just posted in the Movie Discussion thread reminded me that I hadn't mentioned this incredible film yet in this thread. I can't recommend it highly enough. It's maybe the greatest romantic movie ever made. Maybe the greatest musical ever made.

Posting this in memory of Chuck Berry. But you could really fill up this whole thread with songs featured in Pulp Fiction.

The same Tom Petty song being used to create memorable moments in multiple movies and tv shows.

I always think of Elliot’s makeover when “American Girl” comes on!
I can’t find clips, but I also loved “Wildflowers” playing as Ann and Chris say goodbye on Parks and Rec. Also the usage of “Learning to Fly” in Elizabethtown.

I think it's safe to say Cameron Crowe was a big fan.
You can't not sing along to that song while driving alone in a car. If it comes on you have to cut loose.

Cinefix just did a great video about music in films, and it’s really quite educational. Learned some terms and styles that I previously had no knowledge of! Definitely worth the view!

Well, since they mentioned this, and it's only like the best movie ever made:
Also this, because it's the same song:
