Jake Roberts waging a personal crusade against Cody, while specifically targeting the egotism inherent in his whole presentation, has potential to be my favorite kind of wresting angle; the kind where you have to admit the heel has a pretty good point. Agreed, potential to be my favorite thing currently. Who do you guys think is his client? Lance Archer or Brodie Lee? Or someone else? Either way, give me a Jake promo next week that lasts for the entire 2 hours of Dynamite! I think Brodie would be an amazing fit as his client.

Either way, give me a Jake promo next week that lasts for the entire 2 hours of Dynamite! Those are the two names that came immediately to mind. I think either one would be a perfect fit with Jake as dynamic big men who can handle the in-ring side easily, but would benefit from having a mouthpiece. But if we're guessing which one, I'd lean towards Archer just because he was supposed to debut this week, but never appeared. Jake's debut feels kind of like a "plans change" type booking move.

If that annoying nerd from Whatculture becomes Spears’ partner, I’m done.
But yeah, Jake was incredible. A Brody pairing seems perfect to me.

Fun show considering the circumstances, but what a damn shame they had to debut Matt Hardy & Brodie Lee to an empty arena & dead silence. I wish they had waited, but who knows when it'll be safe to have a live crowd again.
The commentary was a blast to listen to all night. Everyone was having a good time, riffing on comatose OC, Jericho joining & getting laughs out of JR & Taz. I'd like to hear Taz on commentary more often.

Somebody should tell Kenny and Trent that they're supposed to be taking it easy in the ring and avoiding injury on these empty arena shows.
Also, I think Billy Gunn might've saved Marko's life with that catch.

lol seemed like Kenny and Trent got way to into that, looked like they thought they were having a wrestle kingdom match or something. And I think your right about Marko, Archer giving no fucks, holy shit he threw Marko around like a training dummy.

I must ask: why do wrestling fans continue to tolerate the existence of Broken Matt Hardy? It was only funny for a brief period of time before he realized it was funny. And even then it was never nearly as funny as he seems to still think it is. I get that they have to get creative to fill tv time during our unique global situation right now. So I don't want to complain too much for the time being. But his brief promo as regular old Matt Hardy was so much better and more productive from a character/booking standpoint than any of his Broken bullshit.
TNA needed the viral, "buzzworthy" quality of the character to get eyes back on their product. But AEW isn't that desperate. They should be selling sincerity and substance, not shock value.
Does anybody else feel this way? Or am I just taking my first steps into Jim Cornette bitter old fan territory?

But really, aside from Orange Cassidy, I really haven’t liked any of their goofier things. I’m curious to see it in front of a live crowd, because that gimmick lives or dies based on the reaction. It just doesn’t work with the way things are now, but if it’s over with the crowd, it could be something. I wish they would have just held him off until wrestling is back to normal. But if I had my way, AEW would have paused operations a month ago and stayed away until the pandemic has passed. The empty arena shows do absolutely nothing for me.

I find him fun but I can see how he fits into kind of niche category you either like it or hate but niche might be wrong because he has a large fan base I think its comes down to how much you find ridiculous stuff funny. I find it to be a smart business move considering Matt couldn't poke his head out in a wwe arena without a plethora of delete chants, so I believe that gimmicks fan base is a great money making opportunity and a good way to take fans from wwe that had been wanting it since wwe failed to push "Woken" Matt even though his Ultimate Deletion match with Bray had the highest ratings in the 3rd hour of RAW that entire year. TL;DR I don't think he's for everybody.

TL;DR I don't think he's for everybody. To me, it's all about context with any character. It worked for TNA because they needed something outrageous and meme-worthy to steal some attention for themselves. It was probably fine in WWE because they already do so much nonsensical bullshit, what's one more thing? It would've been perfect for Lucha Underground because that was an entirely different format for a wrestling show. But when you're trying to do a show with more of an old school booking philosophy (emphasizing win/loss records, rankings, etc.) and building legit heat with realistic angles, this kind of camp character doesn't do you much good, I don't think. In other words: the injury to Nick Jackson was an old school heat magnet type angle built around a realistic assault on a human character. Then Broken Matt Hardy shows up and so far the whole storyline has turned into a comedy gimmick about Jericho arguing with a magic drone. It went from an ongoing conflict between natural enemies to being all about what kind of silly nonsense Matt Hardy will throw at us this week. It doesn't generate heat. It doesn't get other characters over. It just gets one dude more praise from his twitter followers for his "creativity". There's a place for that sort of thing in wrestling, but not in your hottest main event angle. But, like I said before, they're doing stupid shit now to fill tv time and I get that. It doesn't matter much for the time being. I just don't like the idea of it continuing in the same manner for too long.

Well I see what you're saying as far as him fitting in with the old school booking, but I think besides the whole him being a vessel thing so far a lot of the magic stuff has been toned down like the teleporting from his debut he said on youtube it was Vanguard 1 projecting his image not actual teleporting which is probably no better considering your standpoint but as of yet he isn't being all magical... yet idk I'm conflicted in a sense cause your point makes a lot of sense to me but Woken Matt left a serious bad taste in my mouth and I've been dying to see him do it somewhere that would let him do his thing. I see the appeal of it myself and I know it's not for everyone I doubt he'll be a champion anytime soon I think Matt actually gives a shit about wrestling and is just happy to be able to wrestle how he wants before his career ends and would like to help make some stars for AEW he's been good at getting other guys over with this gimmick in the past.

Why does Cody insist on doing crappier versions of popular moves in his matches? His springboard cutter is NEVER going to be half as good as Ospreay’s. And his Rainmaker looks downright awful. Not to mention that it’s the finisher of Jimmy Havok, someone who is already on their very own roster! Everything he does has really been rubbing me the wrong way, and it all started with that abomination on his neck.

Minus being world champion, he really seems determined to make himself the John Cena of AEW, doesn't he? I hated that finish in his match with Darby so much! I've seen it done plenty of times before, and have no objection to it in theory. But his rollup was just so shitty. Made Darby look like a total bum getting pinned by such a half-assed move.

It infuriated me. It looked like Darby rolled himself up and decided to not kick out. I’m also sick of Darby being Cody’s job guy. Darby is arguably the most over of the “newer” guys and they have him do way too many jobs. If Darby wasn’t at least making the finals, he should not have been in the tournament.
