But the thing they said will always be free is STILL free. It's the additional things that weren't previously available, like betas and advanced demos, that cost extra.
Still the same service; still free.

Still the same service; still free. This. And instead of signing up for the beta, and never getting an e-mail or a code for it (I signed up for the FFIV beta, for example, yet never got an email), I'm assuming the people who pay will be able to be a part of the beta.

I'm sure i've done this same shtick in the past and was no sold, but here we go again: Are any of you familiar with Phantasy Star Online? It's essentially a primitive hack-n-slash MMORPG. I believe it was the first console game of that genre (it was first released on Dreamcast), and so in context it was pretty much unlike anything you'd seen before. It's a tougher sell today, as games of it's kind are far more expansive. It's nothing like WOW or Final Fantasy XI - which is either a bad thing or a good thing depending on your relationship with those games. It and Starcraft are pretty much the pivotal games of my life. I've bought PSO and spent hours on it on Dreamcast, Gamecube, X-Box, and PC. I have no idea why I love it so much. I mention this because i've only recently discovered that it's PC version is hosted on a private server, and can be downloaded and played for free. The community, surprisingly, is still relatively thriving and dedicated. I have no idea what people would make of it today - it's repetitive and thin, but it should appeal to those who like Diablo II, Ultimate Alliance, etc. The big sell of the game to me is that when you group with a party of four (if you're competitively leveled), you can run through the entire first game in a few hours times. To me, having an "endpoint" is always appealing, and it's enormously satisfying that you know your group very well by the end of it. Here's the private server's website, and here's a download link. Full game is only 450 MB. You'll get a Trojan warning if you launch the game and you're using Norton, but it's a false positive. If anyone is even remotely curious, let me know and we'll get playing. Or, PM me and I can tell you more than you can possibly want to know (as if this wasn't already).

Personally, I'm familiar with the Dreamcast, Gamecube, and Xbox 360 versions. I have yet to play the first two mentioned, but I didn't like the 360 one. At all. I'm not going to be busy in the slightest for the next two weeks, so I'll download it and try it out. Thanks for mentioning it, though. I never knew about a PC version.

I remember playing that for hours. And it was a DEMO!!

360 one was a different game, a "sequel" or "reimagining" of sorts. Gameplay isn't too far off, but PSO is a lot more streamlined. You can literally see every area of the first game in one play through.

Don't mean to double post, but if anyone is wondering why they're hasn't been a gaming news for july, it's because NOTHING is going on. Aside from a couple of trailers, nothing really noteworthy has happened. Mainly because E3 was just a month ago.
So there you go. If they're is a something to post, I'll do so.

Steam has a free game available to everyone!
It's called Alien Swarm. I have no idea what it's about, but it's FREE!
