Jason and I very much disagree with abandoning The MV Zone completely, especially the server. While there isn't a need for constant updates and news posts, it's still a great, quick, easy resource for music video.
I've said for years I'd pick pick up server costs, and I'm willing to do the same today. Seeing TMVZ totally die isn't something I want to see happen, and while there is no way to spark any sort of revival on command, doesn't mean we all have to give up completely. And I know a few people haven't, and I won't name names 'cause I'm afraid I'll forget someone.
This is no 'This site ain't dead! We're gonna hold an awesome competition and things'll be dandy!' post, cuz that's unrealistic; I just want to put it out there Jason and I are willing to put a hand in, if you will.

If we're talking about sharing server costs, I'm more than willing to start chipping in this summer.

It was never about server costs...if it was about that, I would've picked up the tab a long time ago. It's about no one stepping up and helping out- not to sound self-righteous, but the entire site has pretty much solely been on my shoulders for the last year, not that that's a problem. I totally enjoyed it! But, I'm not able to put as much time in, and by virtue of my "retirement post", no one was willing to take the ball.

All I want, and I believe Matt concurs, is for the server to stay up or be cloned and replaced and be rid of viruses. I remember how it was before we had the server and had to rely on YouSendIt to post our videos. It's not worth it to go back to that when the cost is so low, relatively speaking.

That's pretty much how it is now too. The videos are still up, but there is no way for anybody without access to the server to find them. This time without the main-site made me realize how much I rely on it. So yeah, I'd be nice to have it back.

Especially if I can find a script where people can upload their own videos to the server w/o the few staff doing it themselves. The few that have contribute, such as Beej, Frank, Myself, Eric, ect. (and did an ACE job, btw), is just too much and overwhelming; it's a tiring after a while. Either by giving trusted members their own password for their own server folder. Or if I can just find an 'upload' script so users can easily and automatically submit their releases right from their own computer, and then to the browser directly to the server. It's just like uploading a video on YT, RS, MU, SP, or whatever,
I'd like to get a flash player installed, too. Then it'd definitely be like YT or whatever those streaming sites are, but generally for our music videos. No waiting for downloads = more views, and perhaps even a slight rise out of this current MVZ rescission.

Wordpress has a pretty good video player now that can be put on their sites.

Good times. If you're willing to help and chip in, Harry, you can be my guest! I think that's awesome of you.
I don't want comp's abolished, either. I say we do what I've been suggesting for fucking years now, and that's only hold a few big comps, some exhibitions, and that's about it as far as that side of the spectrum is concerned.
What we have next? 5th Anniversary? I say next we go right to Merry Vidmas IV, and perhaps in-between there, some exhibition comps/matches/whatever.
I have zero issues with people moving on to other sites for their videos, but don't completely abandon us yet, fellas. Five years, and we're only in our first true recession.

I think only having 2-3 comps a year is pretty problematic. Look at this board right now, it was pretty much dead, then beej came out with the big announcement and everybody was really busy for a few days, then it just kinda died down like before since the event is way too far down the line to get really excited and talk much about it. And if the board is pretty much dead, it doesn't exactly attract too many new members and such.
With that being said, I have no clue how to get out of this recession. Less comps would certainly take a big burden off of beej's shoulders, which seems to have been an issue in the past.

I'm sure there are people who would step up and help run competitions, most of the time I'd be more than willing.

I think 2-3 is perfect. And the help is definitely welcomed.
But in-between the 'official' comps, anyone can still challenge and have matches, or mini-comps, organized by the participants and promoted by The MV Zone.

After a day (yesterday) of talking mv with Bob, and a day (today) of listening to Zone V's, I can now be counted among the party of people that don't want the site to go away.
After the 5ya, I'm determined to keep things moving so how...but I do think something different needs to be done. I'm not sure what, but I want nothing more than to see this site thrive again...and not just in editing, but with general conversation. I want this site to be the go-to site for editing AND good conversation on any number of topics.
I don't know how this will be accomplished, but I won't be going anywhere post-5ya.

Great to hear that Beej! I'm sure you'll need help with things, so I'm willing to step up and help with anything.
To go with your problem, I think one solution is to promote the hell out of this place on other sites/ forums. Try and recruit new members to make up for the people we're slowly losing.

Once we get a .com back, I'm going to go back and start something Harry and I started with Vidmas- promoting the site on the Bryan and Vinny show on F4W/Observer.
