I mentioned that I had planned on making a series of videos based on my movie watchlist over at Letterboxd, and here is the first one. It covers this past Fall season, September to December. While sorting out a list of what would be featured, I noticed some trends of youth and growing older, and dealing with anxiety and depression. I think those themes are well covered in this video. Check it out if you’re interested and let me know what you think!

Ok, real post this time. Really beautiful work. When you mentioned this concept before I didn't know what to expect. That title could go in so many directions. But this was more than I ever expected. The idea of looking at what you were watching over a period of time and finding a connective theme is fascinating to me. It becomes almost a time capsule of what you were interested in at that moment. Something you could look back at in years to come and immediately be reminded of where you were and what you were going through in your life when you made it. Obviously in a video like this there's a certain level of retrofitting to your theme. You didn't set out in September thinking "I'm gonna purposely watch a bunch of movies about mental health so I can make a video about it." But, through the magic of video editing and some clever clip selection, you're able to re-contextualize shots from a wide variety of films to make them seem like each film fits your theme. Hope this video gets the attention it deserves and you keep this series going. It could become a very unique and special project.

Thank you for the kind words though! I know most non-competition videos don’t get much attention here, non-competition MMVs even less so, but I knew I could count on you watching it. I don’t anticipate subsequent videos being as cohesive and coherent to a particular theme as this one, but I suppose that’s the beauty of the project - it’s impossible to predict what kind of headspace I’ll be in or what I’m going to face before April/May for the Winter edition. But I was pleasantly surprised and satisfied with how accurate this video felt to how I felt for those few dark months. It was maybe the most cathartic video I’ve ever created. You should make one! Also, get on that Judy Garland video I requested! And the next Movie Magic video! You really are quite inconsiderate making me wait around like this! Love ya!

Wasn't expecting this so soon, but this is just what I needed. Getting ready to start a new video, and some inspiration is always appreciated, which is what this video provided. I can tell that producing this video was therapeutic for you, and from a video editor standpoint, I love the concept of some sort of diary concept. Documenting what you've watched, and as a wiseman just said, re-contextualizing all that and just examining the end product to see where your head was at the time, all of that can be rewarding. You may have inspired me to try doing this for wrestling matches I've gotten to watch during each quarter, but we'll see if I ever get to that. As for the actual video, loved the song choice in the beginning. That Bryan Adams cover is lovely, and I got even more excited when the second song came up. Sounds like Chvrches, I think? The voiceover around the 2:00 mark was super heartfelt, sorta puts the rest of the clip selections into perspective. I got tones of vulnerability, but more importantly tones of hope. Certain clips remind me to just enjoy the little things. Also thanks for reminding that I still haven't gotten around to watching Clerks 3. Think I'll get to that real soon. Can't wait for the Winter edition!

Can't wait for the Winter edition! Thanks for the feedback and the kind words! Yeah, the second song is Chvrches. They did an original song for the Death Stranding video game, and while I’ve never played the game, I absolutely adored the song. The Bryan Adams cover (and the clips in the video) come from a movie called “Her Smell.” You should definitely check it out - it’s dark and dizzying, about a musician who is out of control on drugs. It’s fantastic and under seen. The second voiceover between songs is from Chris Gethard. Rainn Wilson’s YouTube community “Soul Pancake” made a documentary called “Laughing Matters” where all these comedians came together to talk about depression and how it has impacted their lives. It’s really beautiful and sad and life-affirming. I’ll link it below if you or anyone else is interested in watching it. And that actually isn’t “Clerks 3.” It’s “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.” Although, “Clerks 3” is supposedly going to be happening soon! But check out “Reboot” - it contains mini-sequels to a lot of the View Askew movies.

You didn’t give me time to reply with my angry gif!!! I couldn't stand it any longer. Writing bad feedback, even as a joke, just makes me itchy. It wouldn't work with me. My viewing habits are based far too much on whims. Last weekend I went from Mortal Kombat: Annihilation to Viva Las Vegas to Das Boot in one 48 hour period. Try identifying a theme in that.
