He said he wouldn't. Then he did. What a hypocrite!
Seriously though, during this pandemic, spending more time alone at home, I got in the habit of watching a lot more older wrestling than I have in a long time--the stuff I grew up with, and still have the most love for. And in doing so, was reminded of why I really started to love wrestling in the first place. So I set out to make a video to remind myself why I loved wrestling editing in the first place.
The idea was to take a bare bones, back to basics approach. Cut out all the effects, color correction, storytelling, and pseudo-artistic bullshit and just focus on the characters, the moves, the flow, and the structure of the video. And I had to do it outside of a competition, just to remind myself what it's like to do a video just for the pleasure of creating something fun and entertaining. This is the result.
Brief profiles of nine of WCW's top cruiserweights, with cameos from other key figures in the division. Set to slightly anachronistic musical accompaniment.
Watch the video. Leave some feedback. Or don't, this was really just for me, anyway.

Holy shit! Seeing an AD wrestling edit is honestly a blessing, this made my night. Your style has always been a huge inspiration for me, I'm really sad your Nakamura & Takahashi video's were taken down, I used to watch them very often to try and get inspired. You not doing any effects and keeping it a simple presentation was such a breath of fresh air in a community where every video now is packed in with effects (including my own), so that is a very welcome surprise. I thought the text that you used in the intro and outro was simple, but beautiful. Perfect choice of colors too. This was so much fun and you managed to keep up a fast pace all the whole way through, which is a feat in itself because for me that's really not easy to do. Absolutely loved how you divided sections of the song and dedicated each to a different cruiserweight matching the lyrics of the song. With the in between stuff being the cameo's from other cruiserweights. Each section just flowed together so perfectly, one second it's the scientist Dean Malenko, the next it's the magician Ultimo Dragon. The Alex Wright dance sync ruled. The Juventud part is probably my favorite just because of that over the top rope leg lariat? that you synced with the "huaaa". I honestly feel like just dropping the WWF Raw I'm catching up with and just checking out WCW for this cruiserweight division right here. I loved everything about this! Fingers crossed we see more AD wrestling edits, even if it's non competition videos.

This ruled man. I wish we had more of these sort of videos that followed the same approach you did. And even without any effects, story, or all that silly stuff we do, this still came out tremendous. My memory of WCW is hazy, mostly just remember the outlandish storylines and wacky characters (hope you feature 3 Count sometime). The actual wrestling unfortunately took a backseat as a kid. So I appreciate you filling in the gaps with the Cruisers. With you and CheeZe mentioning rewatching old WCW, think I'll give it a go as well. La Parka always stood out to me. His outfit, his strut, his iconic mask. And the man played a mean chair guitar damnit! Fortunate enough to live next to Mexico and I was able to snag a La Parka mask though its falling apart at this point. How much did this dude weigh? He seems way too big to be a cruiser, he should be jobbing to Nash and Hall instead. Must've suck to be on the receiving end of his dives. Kidman had one hell of a shooting star press. Doesn't need to be said, but Deano was smooth as hell in the ring. A true scientist. I think Ultimo was my favorite cruiser as a kid, and this was just based on his mask/outfit/color scheme. The guy was quick as hell too. Man, WCW Jericho has to be my favorite of his versions. Always cracked me up and he wasn't too shabby in the ring neither. Can't believe you didn't give Alex Wright a whole section! The Juice! I remember him being annoying as hell. Eddie and Rey are the kings obviously. Dang its nice to talk about the actual wrestling and not about editing. This has me hyped. And you seem to be genuinely happy releasing this out of competition and just for the enjoyment of it. As I type this, I was going to pull up some WCW on the network, but I ended up going with ECW instead. Always happy to see you put out something and I hope you plan to put out more vids. But at your own leisure of course.

Wrestling peaked with La Parka! This is a fact! I don't think he came close to legitimately qualifying as a cruiserweight. And I don't recall him ever challenging for the belt. But he always worked with all those guys, and his style fit. So I counted him as part of the division.

Was it Jack Jeckel that did the cruiserweights series of videos in the early days of MVZ? Anyways, you should totally rip off that idea and give me as many of these videos as humanly possible! I say this without the slightest exaggeration, this is as good as any video I’ve ever seen here. I know you’ve been tired of the “epic” videos, and they have worn on me to. In a board full of people trying to be Christopher Nolan, you’ve shown that you’re Edgar Wright...and let’s face it, those movies are the most fun and rewatchable anyways.
Request for this to go on YouTube so it can be on my workout playlist and I can watch it everyday!

They told me I had to attend, "Copyright School" in order to be allowed to upload new videos, and I thought that sounded patronizing so I left and put the video on Vimeo. But maybe I'll get over it in a few days. I think I recall Maynard doing a series of match recaps that were all cruiserweight matches, if that's what you're thinking of. Also, I was going for John Carpenter, but I'll settle for Edgar Wright.

Rev won't mention it, but he did a sweet thing by posting it on the MVZone twitter to get some more eyes on it.

I really hope you keep making these comp or not always happy to see one of your videos.

Now when I finished feedbacking matches I can give my feedback to this. One reason why I regret not joining MVZ earlier is that I got to miss your amazing content and never got a chance to give you my opinion and say how much I enjoyed watching your work. Because I get to interact with new editors I get really annoyed that their main focus are effects and they mostly care about them. I feel like this video should be used as an example of editing to someone less experienced to prove them just how far understanding basics and executing them properly can take you. I thought this was fantastic from start till the end. First of all intro is brilliant, it gives me that early WCW vibes and it couldn't match more with the video. Presentation of characters was soooooo well done, how it went from showing a bit of their personality to gradual build up of their moves and all of that in the perfect sync! Everything here just had that right flow that matched that early WCW cruiserweights fun and explosive style, even tho everything is fast with a lot of jump cuts there wasn't a single move that ended too fast or felt like it wouldn't be followed what I just found mindblowing. I was a big fan of "Check it out, what's it all about" sections because of how well that was edited and literally matching those lyrics! Little detail that was so nice to me was Jericho's little dance to the song and using him throwing a sign to the "OH" part. But my favorite part by far was long jump at 2:14, it just couldn't be more perfect with lyrical sync, I swear that jump felt like it lasted forever! Showing title as the ending scene like, this all was about this championship was a very nice choice for the ending. Just a terrific edit and I am sure I will find myself going back to it quite a lot!

Damn, this was awesome. You were always one of my favorite editors way back in the day, and it’s cool to see you’re still going strong after I took a 10 year or so long break. I never followed WCW and damn does this video make the cruiserweights seem awesome. These kinds of videos were always my favorite, limited narrative in favor of fun, fast paced action. Watching this takes me back to the old days and makes me want to edit something again.

I still use your old BJW video as an example for new editors to learn basic syncing and pacing for a video.
