The Invitation
A really tense thriller which is now on Netflix. It's a slow burn, the first 70 minutes or so is all character development and paranoia. But if you hang in there and invest, the final 15 minutes is a wild ride. Overall highly recommend.

Hacksaw Ridge.
The best movie I've seen all year. The best war movie since Saving Private Ryan. This film will stick with me for a long, long time.

Arrival - I loved this. Denis Villeneuve has to be my favorite director working right now, each film he has made has been in my Top 5 films of the year. This guy makes fantastic movie after fantastic movie and this is no diffrent. Everything about this was near perfect from the pacing, the cinematography the acting, the story, to the fantastic score. I loved everything about this, go see it!

Rogue One.
Will land on my Top Ten list this year. Beautiful and uncompromising. Ties into the Star Wars mythos so gorgeously.

Manchester by the Sea - Subtly beautiful. Has the ring truth in every scene. Certainly one of the best movies of the year (somewhere in my current top 5).

Rogue One - Probably the best Star Wars movie since Empire. I know I definitely liked it more than The Force Awakens at least. It's like a Star Wars version of The Dirty Dozen or The Magnificent Seven. I really wish they hadn't used a CGI Peter Cushing to play Governor Tarkin, though. Ignoring the moral questions that it raises, CGI just hasn't advanced to the point of accurately re-creating a human face. The result is kind of awkward and lifeless. On the other hand, Vader, in just a couple scenes, is more badass than he's been since torturing Han Solo and cutting Luke's hand off.

La La Land.
Absolute magic. Hollywood needs more of this - which is their past.

Don't Breathe - A brutal, relentless, and nail-bitingly suspenseful thriller. Gets a little less interesting in the final third as the slow-burning suspense gives way to in-your-face violence. But nevertheless, it's still a masterfully constructed piece of pure-cinema. If you skipped it in theaters, do what I did, and watch it alone in a dark room late at night. Preferably with a proper sound system, or at least a really good pair of headphones (the sound design is key to the experience). Would actually make a great double-feature with Green Room, if your heart can stand the tension.

I can't get Sing Street out of my head. It's so wonderful in all the ways that I love movies. This is "Garden State" / "(500) Days of Summer" levels of greatness to me. Could be the first time in years to make it's way into my all-time top ten.
