I know the movie club thing has been a massive failure when we’ve attempted it in the past, but I want to give it one more try, and call me crazy, but I believe I’ve devised a system that might be a little more successful.
The concept is pretty simple: On the first day of every month a “challenge” will be issued to the entire MV Zone community. These challenges will not be to watch one specific movie, but instead to choose your own movie from a pre-defined category, and to watch and review it by the end of the month.
For example, the challenge could be something broad like “watch any Japanese movie and review it by the end of the month” or something a bit more specific like “watch any movie directed by Akira Kurosawa and review it by the end of the month.” As long as you aren’t choosing one specific movie for everybody to watch then you can be as creative as you want with your challenge. Just try not to leave us with too limited an option. The idea is for this club to be as inclusive as possible.
As far as participation is concerned, there are no sign ups necessary. You can come and go as you please. Ideally, people would participate every month, but you’re not required to do anything. If the challenge for a certain month doesn’t interest you, don’t worry about it, take the month off. In addition, nobody’s going to stop you from reviewing more than one movie in a month. As long as you stick within the guidelines of that month’s challenge, you can participate as often or as rarely as you like.
I also want to stress that nobody is expected to write long, thoughtful essays about the movies they watch. While the idea is to promote critical thinking and intelligent discussion within this community, if you don’t have anything interesting to say, what can you do? Your review can be as short or as long as you're comfortable making it. All I can ask is that you write at least one complete sentence about the movie you watched. Don’t just apply an arbitrary numerical value to the film and call it good.
I will be issuing the first challenge on October 1, after that I guess we’ll play it by ear. I’m thinking maybe a first come, first serve type of setup to determine who gets to issue the next challenge. I don’t really want to get a list of future challengers going, because I feel like people sign up for these things with every intention of participating, and then as time goes by they lose interest, or just forget about it completely. This way things stay a little more fresh. I will ask that all challenges be issued via a PM to me, and then I’ll assume the responsibility of making sure it’s made public on the first of the month. But please don't send me any challenges until after I've issued the initial challenge on October 1.
I can’t really think of anything else that needs to be said. This thread is really just to create a little pre-awareness for my little brainchild. I guess all that’s left is to open things up to suggestions, questions, comments, etc.
