I am new to the world of editing. I am using Final Cut Express, and trying to import footage from various DVDs. How would you do that?
How can I get VOB files into Final Cut so that they can work properly? I downloaded a program called Handbreak that allows me to save the VOB files as Mpeg4s, but these files are not compatible with FCE. I was able to convert these videos into DV files via ToastX. DV files can be imported into FCE, but they barely work. They're always super choppy.
Please help me figure out how to get my DVD files into Final Cut!
Thank you so much in advance!

I don't work with Final Cut but I don't think you can use VOB files in any editing software. You're best bet would be to convert them into a different file format.

I've actually been using Final Cut Express, however, I've yet to try to rip a dvd and use it in there. I do know that .avi files work very well.

Do you know of a way that I could convert m4v or mpeg4s into avis? If I could just figure this one thing out, it'd be so useful...

The best and ideal format for editing on FCP is for it to be uncompressed if you're not editing HD footage that is. So first you need to specify if you have HD or non-HD. The only issue with having the files uncompressed is their file sizes will be massive but its what you gotta do for seamless editing. .AVI is only a container btw, not a format, the file could be mpeg4 and avi at the same time but won't function in FCP.

For the Mac users. I've used Handbrake to rip the dvd onto my computer, and then I use MPEG Streamclip to change it to a format that works.

Just rename the file extension .mpg (or if that for some weird reason doesn't work for you, watch the video below for an alternate method)
