How do you choose your songs?
We touched a bit on this in MV? #2, but let's go a bit more in-depth. One of the key components in creating a memorable video is song choice. It may also be one of the toughest decisions during your editing process.
How do you go about finding the right choice in music? What elements of a song(s) influence you the most in selecting that piece? Is it lyric synch? Song pace? Tell us why you choose the music you do, and possibly give us examples of your work.
Apologies for missing a question for last week. If you can tell, I'm simply blanking out on questions to ask. If you have any MV? suggestions, please add them here or shoot me a PM.

They come to me randomly. My videos don't help me choose the song. The songs choose my videos.

Pretty much what Maynard said though, like everyone, you tend to try to find songs based on a concept you might have at times. But I don't think you need to entirely focus on finding a song that makes you stand out, but more on if it covers whatever you're trying to present. It doesn't hurt though lol.

My song choices are built almost exclusively on the lyrics of that song. If I hear a song and the lyrics jump out it should be easy to come up with a video concept. If you ever have to force a song to work 9 out of 10 times your video wont work. Unless running a freestyle your lyrics should be relavent to you content.

Well, what i used to do is, see a name of a video made by a good editor and search that song with a different band.
But, now i look for ones with the really effective lyrics, so if there is a song with the lyrics i think i can work on i go for it

I come up with the song first, and then the video idea. So rather than saying "I want to make a _____ video, let me find a song" I will maybe have one or two video ideas in my head but I'm not committed to them, and then I'll hear a song and it'll just click in my head "Oh shit this would work so well with _____" and I'll go with that, even if it's totally different to the ideas I was already throwing around. I subscribe to a couple of record label youtubes, listen to some radio and most importantly I have friends who are much more musically savvy than I am. My podcast cohost put me onto Interpol which I used for my first competitive MV, one of my best friends introduced me to Best Coast for "I Want You".

Usually a song inspires the idea, unless I am really adamant in doing a specific topic. One thing that used to influence me for a long time is trying to be careful in my music choice, as I am aware a good chunk of music I listen to may not be everyone's cup of tea. I've had some of my MVs dis-liked not for the editing or pacing, but rather because "they don't like the song". However, having been editing videos at this point for about 5 years, I lost the care to make sure EVERYONE likes my video and instead work hard on a video in hopes that SOMEONE likes it.
