This month:
Watch and review as many horror films as you can by the end of the month.
-------
Dang it...I knew I shouldnt have stock piled reviews for this one particular month that I'm so fond of...AD, you've done tremendous work...I don't want to see this vanish. Let's see if we can bring this back from the dead...get it...cause like Halloween....dead..or whatever here is my review...SCREAM 4!
I'm not a real big fan of tongue and cheek horror movies...I do like some (Planet Terror, Behind the Mask) and some I just can't stand. The Scream franchise is one of those things that I should just flat out hate but for some reason or another I go back and watch them every once in awhile. And while I agree that the original Scream may have breathed new life in the dead corpse that was the slasher genre it also effectively has done everything to kill it off as well. The whole premise of Scream is that these characters are self aware and that they know every cliche and plot point about slasher pictures, I get that...but why may I ask does each character end up meeting their demise by said cliche. And yet, I can't help but smirk by how in your face it is...Craven knows exactly what he is doing. The original trilogy was a mixed bag, though they are fun watches but have not aged well. Now, Scream 4 is set to usher in a new brand of horror, new decade new rules... OK...let's get to it.
Scream 4 (2011) Starring: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courtney Cox, Emma Roberts
The movie takes place ten years after the Ghost face Killer went on a rampage. Sidney Prescott (Neve) returns to Woodsboro on a book tour when Ghost Face masks his return, this time targeting both Sidney as well as her cousin Jill and all of her friends.
I almost turned it off during the opening scene...that's how obnoxious I felt the beginning was. I did not find it funny or clever...just insulting. I decided to stick with it, and found that Scream 4 is just your basic slasher film. Not as fresh and hip as the original...just an ordinary slasher. Now, the movie itself can be partly to blame of course, but Scream 4 seems like a decade to late...the horror genre itself has moved passed self-parody and into torture porn and from their the documentary/true story way of telling a story. Scream is no longer the cool 20 year old senior still in high school..now it's the 25 year old senior is still trying to be hip and look and sound cool but ends up looking pathetic. But if you were to take this as just a slasher film....it really isn't all that bad. Not a whole lot of suspense but it does a decent enough job that it kept my interest. That's the thing though, Scream 4 isn't suppose to be another slasher, it's suppose to be meta and cutting edge so we have to compare it this previous installments .
Scream 4 seems alot like the original Scream....almost as if it parodies a movie that is itself a parody of the slasher genre. In the movie their is a fake movie based on the murders called Stab (which has seven parts) and the characters openly mock it for being cheesy and having run it's course....is that meta enough for us the viewer? 5.5/10
side note: Also, this is the first of another three part series....so wait...

Jill (who is Sidney's cousin) is revealed to be the murderer along with one of her friends, she kills him and beats herself up and kills Sidney...or so we think...turns out Sidney is alive and one hospital scene later Sidney kills Jill (also I LOVED Sidney's line at the end...clever) so how exactly is this suppose to go another two movies if you have just killed the suppose face of the new trilogy (Emma Roberts) off?!
