Sorry for the confusing title, I couldn't think of anything else clever or witty to name the thread. My attention has been all over the place recently, been getting more into comics, less into movies, making movies, posting on sites and flirting with women thru clever texts messages (It never ends up going anywhere, painfully shy in person) So I thought it would be kind of neat to post on the boards more frequently and in a controlled (?) fashion. Plus I want to promote some stuff too...so there's that. I'll try and keep that to a minimum.
Today was free comic day, a joyous day where people young and old can pickup a free issue from a list of selected comics. The comics on hand were quite diverse, and some were different depending on the store you went too. I am in the process of promoting a new web series called the Sensational Sol-Cara (coming to a youtube near you) and had the great idea of dressing up and appearing at Free Comic Day in character...without anyone actually knowing who I really was. I was quite nervous at first, I am quite use to being awkward but being laughed at hurt sometimes. Luckily for me, I was actually accepted with open arms! As I approached the long line I was greeted to two young kids who were terrified of the Storm Troopers patrolling around. When they saw me, their eyes lite up (I think they thought I was Sin Cara, we have the same build) and waved at them as they did to me. Lots of pictures and waves from the crowd, good day. I highly suggest going to the next free comic day, it's good fun for the entire family and an overall great experience.
Every year, Marvel Comics has a event. Event comics are just that...a single (sometimes more) event that involves the entire Marvel Universe and it's various heroes and villains as they do battle against each other and sometimes themselves. This year is no different as we are treated to a hero vs hero event in Avengers Vs X-Men. Now, something big must be going on if these two famous teams are going to head to head, and you are correct. The Phoenix Force ( A cosmic energy capable of destroying planets) is on it's way to earth and it plans on choosing someone as it's host to control it's incredible power. The conflict is that the Avengers know of the destruction this force can cause and want to stop it before it happens. The X-Men however, feel the Phoenix Force will give rebirth to their dying breed of Mutants (somewhere in the range of 200). The Phoenix Force may have already found it's host in the young Hope Summers...and yep, she's an X-Man. This makes things very difficult as Captain America (leader of the Avengers) shows up to Utopia (home of all Mutants) to "arrest" Hope Summers, this does not sit well with Cyclops (leader of the X-Men) who soundly blasts Captain America off of Utopia which leads to all out war between the two teams. Throw in the fact that Wolverine broke up from Cyclops team of X-Men and has started his own school, not to mention that Scarlet Witch (Magneto's daughter) the very person who almost wiped out all Mutants has recently just returned as well.
With a story so grand in scale, this event will crossover into other comics as well( such as Avengers, New Avengers, Secret Avengers, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men: Legacy, Wolverine and the X-Men, Avengers Academy) and also has it's own spinoff fighting series called AvX: Versus. Now, that is a lot of comics to keep up with; We have a 12 issue main line, and several ties in plus a 6 issue fighting series. That is so many double dips that I've lost count. Think of all the ties in like Raw and Smackdown, where the tv sets up the pay per views as does the tie-ins setup the main storyline. Just like Raw and Smackdown, the storyline can be really great and offer great character backstory and just like Raw and Smackdown they can be really bad and do nothing but stand around for a whole issue. This seems to be the case for AvX so far, nothing really going on yet and it does just enough to make you want to see what will happen next. I'm really enjoying the ties in though, lot of backstory to an event that desperately needs it. It is very interesting to find that some Avengers (who are also X-Men) have to decide what team they are on. Also the fact that their are several alien or alien powered heroes with their own agendas with the Phoenix Force are going into business for themselves are running around and you have a recipe for an awesome comic event that hasn't been awesome up to this point.
I realize that is a ton of information to digest, but if anyone is interested in getting into comics I would be happy to recommend some.
Party On!
