Regarding the future of The MV Zone.

Bad news.

Sorry this is such short notice - frankly, I forgot it was coming up.

The MV Zone's server has a payment due on July 10th. The cost to renew for another two years (our current package) is $142.80. We might be able to subscribe for a new package that would cover us for a year (I'm not sure how this all works), but that would still be a pretty sizable amount of money.

I'm not willing to explore other options right now but if someone wants to look into it I wouldn't be opposed. I'm afraid I won't be of much help with server managing this time - I just got my master's a couple of weeks ago and need to be spending my time on the job hunt.

We should put serious thought into whether its worth keeping the server alive or not. YouTube links are prevalent in all of the competitions and I'd guess that most of the views a video gets are from streaming sites. Archives are important for sentimental reasons, but we need to consider if our continued sentimentality is worth the price tag.

If we want to keep the site, we'll need a few generous donors on short notice.

Any thoughts?

We should start downloading the videos/audio stuff off the server as a precautionary measure. Otherwise I think a lot of the stuff is going to get lost. Personally I would love to keep having the server but if the price tag is too big we can make do without it.

Damn shame that the server is going. How big is it? An archive on a cloud service might work.

It's a damn shame that everything we've put in is going to the wayside. Does anyone know how to easily do a mass download?

I don't know how big it is but it's gigs and gigs of stuff. A cloud service might work, was there a specific website you were thinking off? To do a mass download would be pretty simple I think. If you go into the server through the windows explorer you can simply copy and paste the video folder onto your computer. It'll take a while though.

Does anyone want to split up the contents of the server so that someone doesn't have to download everything?

I really wish I could be of assistance, certainly would have pitched in for the server if I didn't quit my job a few weeks back. Downloading off the server sounds like the best thing we could do for now, maybe do what A2E's doing by uploading everything onto mediafire. Would definitely take some time, but if we can get a handful of us to help, shouldn't be too bad of a problem.
