Hey everyone.
So I have a sorta performance tomorrow in my Screenwriting class. Our task was to write out a screenplay that has two characters where one is trying to give advice to the other but the information is not going through. So I decided to use the Roman Reigns/Daniel Bryan scenario as inspiration...or just straight up ripped it off. Whatever.
I just wanted to know what you guys think of it and where I can improve upon it.
Thanks.
SCENARIO #1
int. building- night
The biggest event in the history of Pro Wrestling United is here, their annual Battle for Glory event that draws a crowd of 50,000 plus every year. Gabe Neville & Jim Graham, who are in charge of laying out the matches and scenarios that will play out the whole year, culminates in this one event. But this year has been different, normally Neville and Graham have their favorites in the main event and while things get hectic when it's talked about online, things normally go off without a hitch. But this time they didn't, the fans want to see their favorite wrestler, Jon Rollins, in the main event. While Rollins doesn't doesn't have the look that the main star is normally sporting, no one can deny that he is the best wrestler on the roster and someone that people naturally rally behind. But, Graham sees more potential in Gorilla Reigns, a 240 pound man with movie star good looks and personality. But Neville wants to see what Rollins can do with a huge platform as being their world champion, and sees him as a more sure fire bet. After weeks and weeks of rewrites and going back and forth with each other on the outcome of the match, the day has come to finalize a finish for the main event. A finish that they are still trying to finalize with less than a half an hour to go.
GABE
I don't know what else I can show you that Reigns isn't the guy. Whether it be the fan backlash online of how we are shoving him down their throats or our decline in viewership on all of our television programs. He is not ready to be the face of this company.
JIM
You can show me everything to prove your point to be right, but I have numbers that prove that your guy is not drawing as much as the chatter that the internet fans make, and isn't even in the top ten in merchandise. Look, I know Rollins is the best wrestler we have, but Reigns has more mainstream appeal that I think we can capitalize on immediately.
GABE
You really think Reigns can carry this company into the future?
JIM
I, and most of the shareholders think so, yes.
A quiet, awkward silence fills the room as Gabe walks around to gather his emotions. Suddenly, he remembers a past situation that can turn the tide of this volcanic situation.
GABE
You know, we've gone through this exact situation 20 years ago. This exact situation, where you and everyone else who thinks they get this business thought Terry Luger would be a big money drawer but fizzled out. In fact, he ended up leaving to a rival promotion years later because you shoved him down everyone's throat and no one could believe that he could defeat our top stars. Yet you still went through with what you & the suits wanted to do.Gabe bends down slightly and gets into Jim's face.GABEYou know what ended up happening?
Jim gets more and more agitated. His face blooming to a reddish hue.
JIM (Angry)
Yes, I remember.
GABE
Bret Owens, the smaller guy who had no marketing appeal became one of the best wrestlers we have ever had in this company.
Jim sits on a steel folding chair contemplating what Gabe is telling him. Gabe continues talking.
GABE
I know that you want what is best for business, and you know that deep down you don't want another situation like 20 years ago happen again.
Gabe slowly walks around Jim and pulls another chair and places it directly in front of him. He sits down slowly and looks directly into his eyes.
GABE
You know what we have to do.
Jim nodes his head in approval as Gabe begins to smile. But suddenly Jim starts shaking his head.
JIM
I know what we have to do, and while I don't want another massive failure happen because of me, you have to trust me that this is the right thing to do.
Gabe groans in displeasure, knowing that he will not be able to convince Jim in going with his plan. But, he instantly thinks of a scenario that he knows Jim will at the very least give some thought into going with.
GABE
How about Phil Colton? He's been in the main bad guy stable for a year and a half, has been consistent in his in-ring work and while the fans have a negative reaction to him, he does move merchandise and has the look that the teens and young adults have today. Plus, with our new movie production company, he can be our top draw since he is a fresh face and our new world champion.
Jim, giving serious thought into what Gabe has proposed, then grows a smile on his face.
JIM
I'd be more than fine with that. But how do we figure him into the main event?
Jim and Gabe put their heads down simultaneously as they start going through their planners and seeing if they can figure out a way to get Phil into the match.
GABE
I got it! He has beaten both of our guys in the main event in the last month right?
JIM
Right.
GABE
How about we change his match with AJ Steen into a Number One contenders match? Then we have him win that, get the fans more interested in the main event since this is a guy that they believe can legitimately be world champion, and have him win it.
JIM
I...I like it!
