Well. That was bullshit.
I get what happened. I'm not upset that we didn't find out what the deal is with Walt. My problems lie with the ideology of the show.
My immediate reaction was such: from the beginning, the show's dealt heavily with science vs. religion, logic vs. faith. Both philosophies were presented as equal. The show, however, wraps up in purgatory, specifically in some sort of bizarre multicultural church. The flash-sideways was Jack finding the spiritual side of himself that he had resisted throughout the entire series. Thus, in the end, faith defeats science. What'd science ever do for Jack, anyway?!
Also, despite all of the various religious symbols on the stained glass window, it was still clearly a Western church. And Catholic imagery had always been a major part of the show. There's an incredibly strong case to make that the series all comes down to Catholic propaganda, which is quite offensive considering the multi-cultural nature of the show.
Now, looking at the episode on it's own terms, the major thing i'm not clear on is the purpose of the concert. It seemed like that was the big event the entire season was leading up to - it was Desmond's attempt to awaken everyone en masse. Then... the concert just sort of happened while Claire had her baby. What the fuck? Also, I didn't get Eloise Hawking's relevance. Was she part of this created universe or not? Why did she resist Desmond converting everyone? That fucking heathen!
I think it's lazy analysis to suggest that the show sucks because it didn't answer questions. I, for one, liked the ambiguity. I'm more offended by how the mythology was tossed aside for this sentimental, overly-melodramatic communion in the final season.
I will still remember the series fondly. The first five seasons (at their best) were very entertaining. Smart, well acted, visionary. Season 6 will always leave a sour taste in my mouth now knowing the conclusion, but it did have two great episodes. But, fuck, I went into the finale expecting to enjoy it and I was left speechless. In a bad way.
Oh, and how fucking useless was the Jacob/MiB episode? Not that we didn't realize it was after it aired... but MiB just sort of, you know, died. Yes, it's a character driven show. The mysteries are not as important as the relationships between characters. But, you know, the thesis of the show is really weakened when you have episodes devoted solely to explaining the origin of the rulers of the Island. What the fuck does that have to do with Jack's spiritual awakening?
And the last thing. Ffffuuuuuckkkkkkk Sayid being with Shannon and not Nadia. His character was driven SOLELY by his love for Nadia throughout the entire fucking series. I don't by that "she couldn't be there because she wasn't on the plane". Desmond and Penny were there. Ben was invited in.

Yeah... reading Eric's post is exactly why I never got in to Lost. I thought this was supposed to be about an island and stranded people, not polar bears, churches and concerts. I do not see how this could be in any way good

i was really looking forward to the finale, but it felt like there was nothing to it. MiB's death was a major let down also, imo.
